The annual 1950s-themed “Rock Back The Clock” family event is scheduled 6-10 p.m. Sept. 7 at Rancho Shopping Center, located at the intersection of Springer Road and Foothill Expressway in Los Altos.

The event, which benefits the Los Altos Festival of Lights Parade, offers vintage rock ’n’ roll music, food, drinks, dancing and a Hula-Hoop contest.

Organizers bill the evening as an opportunity for neighbors and schoolmates to get together after a summer away.

The event particularly appeals to parents and their children, according to Nancy Schneider, Festival of Lights Parade volunteer.

“It’s a family get-together with children, (for) intermingling. Girls get dressed up in poodle skirts and ponytails,” she said. “The demographic group (that attends ‘Rock Back The Clock’) is the same people we do the parade for.”

The Rancho Merchants Association organizes and staffs the event. Proceeds (including the $5 entry fee) support the Festival of Lights Parade.

“We depend on donations,” said Schneider, emphasizing that the Festival of Lights Parade Association is a nonprofit organization.

She added that the cost of staging the parade, excluding float renovation and costume replacements, is $20,000.

The parade is traditionally held the Sunday following Thanksgiving. This year’s parade is scheduled 6 p.m. Nov. 25 in downtown Los Altos.
