Fueled by parent donations, the Los Altos Educational Foundation fulfilled its promise to the Los Altos School District, presenting a check for $2.35 million at the Junior Olympics April 28.

The foundation also delivered a second check for an additional $205,000.

The larger grant funded staff and programs for K-8 students across the nine schools in the district, including class-size reduction, art, music, science, PE and junior-high electives and teachers in charge.

“Los Altos School District parents and community donors have done it again this year,” said LAEF Co-President Joe Seither. “Our community is deeply committed to high-quality, full-featured public education in small neighborhood schools. This dedication to excellence, along with a readiness to provide the necessary funding, makes LASD a magnet for young families.”

Last July, at its fiscal year-end, the foundation had received more donations than it had committed to the district, so it provided the additional funding for programs that parents and the district identified as priorities, such as Khan Academy and Communications, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

“We are working closely with the district to plan for next school year,” said foundation Co-President Kristine Bardman. “We’ve already surveyed parents on their satisfaction with this year’s foundation-funded programs, so we’re very clear on what’s important to them going forward. This annual feedback from parents guides our grant-making process every year.”
